The Prophet (Le Prophète) is a Stereo & 5.1 Channel Surround Sound DSD Opera Triple Album. Featuring the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Mark Elder and a host of solo artists.
Recorded live in concert at Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in 2023, this album sees the London Symphony Orchestra and conductor Sir Mark Elder join forces with Lyon Opera Chorus, Maîtrise des Bouches-du-Rhône, the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra, and an incredible cast of soloists to bring to life Meyerbeer’s visionary historical drama, Le Prophète (The Prophet).
The opera is based on a true story. In the 1500s, a charismatic innkeeper was converted to Anabaptism by itinerant preachers. After becoming a preacher himself, he came to Münster and established a tyrannical rule, renaming it Jerusalem and proclaiming himself king, before later being killed.
Add to this a bride who is a fighter, and the most formidable mother figure ever shown on an operatic stage, and Le prophète is the quintessential grand opera – a spectacular large-scale work that made the Paris Opera the leading stage in Europe, and Meyerbeer a composer admired and envied by the greatest.

…this new disc offers us the opportunity to explore the music of a different era when, it claims, the City of Light “set the tempo for cosmopolitan and carefree celebrations”. As it clearly demonstrates, Milhaud, Chabrier, Ravel and Bizet certainly knew how to communicate real joy and liveliness in their scores, while Alexandra Soumm, conductor Benjamin Levy and the players of the Pelléas Chamber Orchestra demonstrate an almost tangible degree of fun and enthusiasm in their very well recorded performances. Even if I remain unconvinced by all that over-the-top self-promotion (“this dream orchestra… an orchestral utopia”, indeed!), I can certainly appreciate the fine musicianship that’s on display on this imaginatively compiled and altogether very finely executed new disc.

This is a top-drawer performance by all concerned, particularly the trio of principals. Galoyan and DeShong don’t over egg the pudding where coloratura is concerned and the results sound well judged. In the smaller roles, Edwin Crossley-Mercer convincingly creates a most unpleasant Oberthal and the anabaptists are well chosen.
A proven master of large orchestras and choruses, Sir Mark Elder brings everything tautly together conducting with verve, skill and precision. The London Symphony Orchestra is hard to fault here, playing superbly, and there is a splendid contribution by the young players of the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra. With plenty to do, the Lyon Opera Chorus and the children of the vocal art centre Maîtrise des Bouches-du-Rhône make a real impact.
