José Manuel Álvarez
Prize winner of the II International Joaquín Rodrigo Violin Competition (Madrid, 2004), “Primer Palau” International Competition (Barcelona, 2006) and XLI International Course of “Música en Compostela” (Santiago de Compostela, 1998). He also received the Honor Prize of the Ourense Conservatory, two Grand Prizes (in Violin and Chamber Music) at the Barcelona Conservatory and a Postgraduate degree with a final grade of “Distinction” at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (Austria).
His main teachers were Gaiané Pogossova (Oviedo), Agustín León Ara (Barcelona) and Maighread McCrann (Vienna). He also participated in International Master Classes with teachers such as Zakhar Bron, Valentin Erben, Igor Frolov, Lewis Kaplan, Ferenc Rados, Andreas Röhn, Donald Weilerstein and Antje Weithaas.
He performed in major concert halls of Austria, Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and United Kingdom, and as a soloist with orchestras such as the Spanish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Balearic Symphony Orchestra and Galicia Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. He recorded for the Spanish Radio, Spanish Television and Catalonian Radio.
He was a member of the Joaquín Rodrigo Chamber Orchestra, the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra and the Galicia Symphony Orchestra. As concertmaster, he has collaborated with the Galicia Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Menorca Chamber Orchestra, among others. He was also founding member of the “Música en Compostela” String Quartet, specialized in performing music of Spanish composers.
He regularly teaches in different music courses in Spain and in Conservatories of Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca, Ourense and the Catalonia College of Music (Barcelona). He is currently on the Faculty of the Conservatory of Music of the Balearic Islands, where he is a Violin Professor.
