A powerhouse in the cultural life of mid-Norway! That is what people today say about the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and Opera. The orchestra’s history goes back to 1909, when dedicated enthusiasts invited the public to the first subscription concerts. The St. Olav Jubilee in 1930 saw a surge in activity, but it was not until the founding of the Trondheim Chamber Orchestra in 1947 that the modern professional ensemble began to take shape. It was taken over by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation in 1962 and fairly soon became one of the country’s leading orchestras. Since then it has increased in size and quality. In addition to giving regular symphony concerts, the orchestra is active in a variety of spheres, including opera and musical theatre, concerts and projects targeting children and teens, contemporary music, pedagogical activity and chamber music. Henning Sommerro has collaborated with the TSO over a period of many years. The high artistic level of this collaboration made it a natural choice for the recording of Ujamaa and The Iceberg.
