With Yerba Buena Bounce, its tenth album, The Hot Club of San Francisco confirms its reputation as America’s longest-running and finest Gypsy Jazz ensemble. Inspired explorations of Django Reinhardt’s tunes, originals and more, are captured in shimmering HiRes sound.

The Hot Club of San Francisco is a quintet of accomplished and versatile musicians who celebrate Django Reinhardt’s and Stephane Grappelli’s renowned Hot Club de France. The ensemble borrows the all-string instrumentation of three guitars, violin and bass from the original Hot Club, but breathes new life into the music with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions from the group’s superb lead guitarist, Paul Mehling. Hearing the ensemble takes the listener back to the 1930s and to the small, smoky jazz clubs of Paris. The music of The Hot Club of San Francisco has entranced audiences around the globe for more than a decade.

Mandolinist David Grisman, father of Dawg music and good friend of The Hot Club, makes a special guest appearance on two tracks. The set is further enhanced by bandoneon virtuoso Seth Asarno, and two bonus tracks feature the quintet augmented by three Dixieland horns!

Recorded by multi-Grammy-nominated Prof. Keith Johnson at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California, the Yerba Buena Bounce sessions benefited from the historic ambience, scene of hundreds of classic jazz and rock recordings. Using his own custom-built microphones and electronics (as always), Johnson was able to utilize some of Fantasy’s unique facilities, such as a legendary echo chamber, to add luster to his always life-like soundscapes.

We are very excited to release Ray! from one of Native DSD Music’s most popular vocalists Carmen Gomes and her Carmen Gomes Inc. band from Sound Liaison. In just days after its release, Ray! became our #1 DSD Best Seller.

The album is a tribute to the music of legendary singer Ray Charles.  Recorded in Stereo DXD, it is available in Stereo DSD 512, DSD 256, DSD 128, DSD 64, DXD and PCM 768k at NativeDSD from the PCM 786k Edit Master Source.  

Each recording starts and ends with the main artist alone in the hall, the only interplay being the acoustics of the hall and his mind. No audience is present except the ghosts from the past. The music must create an Arch, going from the single-instrument performance to the more complex band performance and back to the last solo performance. The same principle goes for the engineering; each recording starts out with only one Josephson C700S 3-channel stereo microphone.

As the music gains in complexity more microphones may be deployed, the only limit being the imagination and technical skills of the recording engineer. The producer and engineer must aim to make the album have a unifying sound, despite the different recording techniques employed.

“We started working on Ray! in the unencumbered period before the adversity of Covid 19 came upon us. In the darkest period of lockdowns, we left it alone, and recorded ‘Up Jumped the Devil’ which somehow was more in sync with the life we were living in that period. When the restrictions were lifted, it felt just like Ray’s song ‘The Sun is Gonna Shine Again’; everything seemed possible.  

We recorded the last part of the album this summer. And a long and beautiful summer it was, a summer which made one feel grateful for all that seemed so self-evident before.

Mixing and mastering was finished just before the sky clouded over and another wave came upon us. But I still have faith. Together we are strong, and we have music to get us through this. Because “Music is about the only thing left that people don’t fight over” as Ray Charles used to say.

To me this album represents a ray of light during the darkness, and I hope it can be that for you as well.”

Friends Talk is an album from the Jazz group ArpiShow on the Hunnia label. ArpiShow is a Jazz Swing orchestra founded in 2017 by clarinet-saxophone artist Árpád Dennert with the aim of providing the kind of easily accessible, yet artistically high-quality performance of traditional Jazz and Swing music which he loves, and which is popular with the audience. The group’s motto is “Pure Swing, Nothing Else!”

This is a Live to Stereo Pure DSD 256 Recording that is exclusively available from NativeDSD Music in Pure DSD.  In addition to the recorded DSD 256 bit rate, the other DSD bit rates have been created in the DSD Domain using the Signalyst HQ Player 4 Pro mastering tools by Tom Caulfield at the NativeDSD Mastering Lab.

Friends Talk features the title track written by Arpad Dennert along with a number of classics from the American Songbook. The selections include Them There Eyes, Young At Heart (made famous by Frank Sinatra), Makin’ Whoopee, I’ve Found A New Baby, Shine, Goodnight My Love and The Pink Panther Theme written by Henry Mancini.
