Weightlessly light and grounded at the same time. That’s the sound of the music on the album Bossa, Ballads and Blues by the Bassface Swing Trio with Special Guest Bruno Muller.

The album features 8 standards including Estate by Bruno Martino, Prelude to a Kiss by Duke Ellington, Georgia On My Mind and Stardust by Hoagy Carmichael, Black Coffee by Sonny Burke & Paul Francis Webster, The Shadow Of Your Smile by Johnny Mandel, Laura by David Raksin and I Can’t Get Started by Vernon Duke.

This trio has never been so relaxed and airy. Bassist Jan-Philippe Wadle plucks cloudy bass lines, Florian Hermann plays drums in a gripping yet reserved manner and Thilo Wagner is a lyrical pianist on the noble Fazioli F228 Grand Piano.

With special guest Bruno Müller they have invited one of the most renowned German Jazz guitarists to play on this recording. These four musicians celebrate the classics of Jazz history casually and gently, but always with emotional depth and a subtly noticeable swing feeling. With his warm guitar tone, guitarist Bruno Müller fits this swing trio perfectly. His improvisations glitter filigree.

The high level at which these musicians can play is shown by the fact that they played the titles live into the DSD converter via analog mix – direct-to-disc. Honest music without a mains or ground. On the album, the listeners once again experience the most authentic sound of the instruments. These musicians elevate swing standards to the sphere of timeless beauty with their subtle playing.

2xHD Mastering and Jazzology Records present Explosive, a collection by American Jazz Pianist and Vocalist Dorothy Donegan.  Supported by bassist Jerome Hunter and drummer Ray Mosca.

Donegan, a protege of the legendary pianist Art Tatum, was primarily known for performing in the stride piano and boogie-woogie style. She worked in Chicago nightclubs and concert halls, remaining in relative obscurity from the time her 1942 recording debut until her performances at the 1987 Montreux Jazz Festival garnered her acclaim as a recording artist.

This high-resolution Analog to DXD transfer of Donegan’s works was done by Rene Laflamme at 2xHD Mastering.  NativeDSD’s Mastering Engineer brings you a Stereo DSD 512 edition created from the DXD transfer using Signalyst’s HQ Player 4 Pro Mastering Tools.  Exclusively at NativeDSD Music.

You’re going to love Dorothy Donegan. When you’re used to the styles of mellower, more restrained musicians, your first exposure to this dynamic woman can hit your ears like a pianistic plunge in cold water. That initial contact is rough, but soon you’re feeling great all over. Her left hand dispenses thunder with the speed and regularity of a summer storm over the desert while her right ignites dazzling bolts of lightning. Explosive!

Dorothy Donegan – Piano & Vocals
Jerome Hunter – Bass
Ray Mosca – Drums

Grammy Award Winner for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album

Famed Jazz star Bob Mintzer brings his tribute of the music of Count Basie to DMP with Homage to Count Basie.  This is a Live to 2 Channel and 4 Channel DSD recording by Tom Jung assisted by Mark Conese. NativeDSD is excited to bring this Grammy Award-winning Big Band album to our listeners in Stereo and Multichannel DSD – including new DSD 128, DSD 256, and DSD 512 editions created by Tom Caulfield at the NativeDSD Mastering Lab using Signalyst’s HQ Player Pro 4 mastering tools.

The Bob Mintzer Big Band delivers brilliant interpretations of classic Count Basie tunes delivered by the best musicians in New York (maybe the world). All compositions on Homage To Count Basie are arranged by Mintzer. All of the solos were performed live with the band and in most cases using the first take, no “overdubs”, “punch-ins” or “fixes”. This is real music in real-time.

Familiar tunes on Homage to Count Basie include April in Paris, One O’clock Jump, Shinny Stockings, Lil’ Darlin, and Cute. They sound much like the wonderful original arrangements, though definitely “Minzter-ized”. There are also three new Bob Mintzer compositions, two of which are clearly in the Basie tradition, Havin’ Some Fun and Lester Jumps Out. The third original, Home Basie has Basie sensibility juxtaposed with an R&B groove.

From the Artist

When one thinks of Count Basie, his orchestra, and the music his organization left us, several words come to mind. Positive, uplifting, swinging, fun, spontaneous, and joyous are but a few. His legacy has influenced not only big band music but also all of Jazz by way of the stellar musicians he kept and the great stable of arrangers who wrote for the band.

People like Lester Young, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Frank Foster, Thad Jones, Sammy Nestico, Ernie Wilkins, and Neal Hefti have had such a huge influence on my musicianship. I offer this homage to Count Basie, his music, and all the great artists who were spun off from his band.

There are 5 tunes commonly associated with the Basie band on the disc. In arranging these 5 songs I went and listened to as many recorded versions as I could find, and then picked up my pencil. I stuck fairly close to what I had heard in writing the arrangements, trying only to make room for the wonderful players in the band, and to perhaps slightly “Mintzerize” the songs.

The remaining 3 songs are original compositions. Two of them are clearly in the Basie tradition (Havin’ Some Fun and Lester Jumps Out). The third song is an idea that resulted from superimposing the Basie sensibility on an R and B groove: what might have happened if Sly Stone and the Count teamed up. I think this is one of the most fun recording experiences I have ever encountered, in great part due to the material, but also because of the great musicians in the band and the comfortability factor from having worked with Tom Jung for the last 16 years. I hope you feel some of the positive and uplifting energy we felt when you listen to the music. Have some fun!

— Bob Mintzer

This latest album from tenor saxophonist Bennie Wallace (a familiar audiophile artist) is one of his finest and most lyrical sessions to date. Recorded direct to 2-track Analog Tape at Systems 2 in New York in May the session features some of the hottest jazz musicians currently working in the US: Mulgrew Miller (piano), Peter Washington (bass) and Lewis Nash (drums) The performances include the following Love For Sale. I Concentrate On You, A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing, When A Woman Loves A Man, April In Paris, Milestones and Con Alma. The sound and feel of the album is very close to that of the great Moodsville and Prestige recordings of the 50s and 60s featuring artists like Gene Ammons. This album is a tribute to those great recordings hence the title Moodsville. There are stunning versions of April In Paris, A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing and When A Woman Loves A Man. This is the kind of beautiful, smoky, full bodied and ballad-filled tenor sax album that audiophiles just love!

“Bennie Wallace is unlike any tenor saxophonist, often alternating between a soulful, fat tone (which is very similar to Ben Webster’s approach) and sudden unpredictable jumps (no doubt inspired by alto saxophonist Eric Dolphy). Joined by an outstanding rhythm section consisting of pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Lewis Nash, Wallace explores favorites from the swing and bop eras, with his bandmates providing a solid anchor underneath his flights. Two gems from the pen of Billy Strayhorn, the rhapsodic “My Little Brown Book” and the fragile ballad “A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing,” stand in a class by themselves with Wallace’s fresh interpretations. Both theLatin-flavored arrangement of “Love for Sale” and Dizzy Gillespie’s “Con Alma” pack a powerful punch, while “Milestones” (the earlier one which Miles Davis recorded for Savoy, though it was actually composed by John Lewis) takes a far more adventurous route than typically heard.

This excellent session demonstrates a mature artist with a very distinct sound, which should be the ultimate goal of every jazz musician. This highly recommended Album is one of Bennie Wallace’s best sessions of his long, very fruitful career.”

Dizzy was one of the seminal figures of the bebop movement. These historic recordings bear witness to an important phase in the career of this exceptional trumpeter.

Jazz is an international music and Benny Carter is one of its leading statesmen. Born In a district of New York known as Hell’s Kitchen on August 8, 1907 he has proved conclusively that talent, determination and hard work can be combined to achieve the highest eminences.

In Carter’s case it has led to total instrumental control, a mastery of the arranger’s craft, the will to form and lead successful orchestras and the ability to compose music for every occasion. Although he has played trumpet, trombone, clarinet, tenor and piano it is as an alto saxophonist that Benny has achieved his enviable reputation as an instrumentalist.

He has acted as an inspiration to hundreds of younger men, all of whom have been fascinated by the seemingly effortless way in which that flawless tone is produced.

The broad, sweeping phrases of his improvisations have the structural stability of compositions in their own right and who can forget Benny’s solo on the Norman Granz produced Funky Blues when he came on after Charlie Parker and Johnny Hodges with what sounded like a two-chorus summing up of the history of jazz.

So-called entertainment or light music tends to carry a negative connotation these days. For many, it would seem that achieving overnight success and making loads of money are on a par with easy music, preferably performed by musicians in very smart attire. But that certainly hasn’t always been the case. Indeed, Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven and, of course, the Strauss family – to name but a few great composers – whose music belongs to the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra’s repertoire, could provide audiences of their day with plenty of exciting, entertaining fare with their contradances, ländlers, waltzes and quodlibets to which people danced, laughed and drank. Mastering this aspect of composition was an aart for such masters.
The main difference with much of today’s popular music is perhaps that, in the past, superficiality was not necessarily a prerequisite. The same holds true for NedSym Lite. After our concert performances featuring works by Beethoven, Schumann and Wagner, for instance, why not enjoy NedSym Lite? Performed with such skill, mastery and success! We simply couldn’t resist sharing all this with you on a CD…
