Character pieces by: Grieg, Nielsen, Lalo, Hannibal, Ancient Chinese, Lund Christiansen

From their first concert in the Monastery La Cartuja de la Sierra in Andalusia, Spain in the summer 1992, they have toured throughout Europe, North and Central America and Asia, giving more than 1.500 concerts from a repertoire spanning from the late renaissance and early baroque, the classical and romantic periods, to contemporary music written especially for them.

In celebration of their 25th Anniversary, Michala and Hannibal have selected a very special program of some of the pieces they have have played live so many times – to share that intimate “fleeting moment” they have perfected in the live performances. Featuring musical sketches and character pieces by Carl Nielsen, Edvard Grieg, Edouard Lalo, Asger Lund-Christiansen, Lars Hannibal and a new arrangement of an ancient Chinese melody, “Garden Party” perfectly captures the spirit of “Conversation, Companionship and Communication” that has defined their quarter-century long musical partnership.

The music selected by Tina Chen Yi and Lars Hannibal for Melodies: Romantic Music for Violin and Guitar is the soundtrack for a daydream, or the twilight accompaniment for a romantic dinner. The emphasis is on Melody – beautiful, finely arched musical lines that reach beyond the pressures of everyday life and transport you, to a quiet realm of song.

With the romantic charm of the violin and the tender sounds of the guitar, a world of melody unfolds. There is an intimate quality to both instruments – their elegantly carved shapes reminiscent of the female form. When played together, their sounds complement each other – the endless song of the violin, accompanied by the gentle strumming of a guitar is the perfect serenade, their tender duet framed by silence.

A ‘Spanish’ violin concerto
It has been said of the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns that one could discuss French music for hours without even mentioning his name. Though a famous composer, his music was not considered typically French in the same way as that of Fauré, Franck or Debussy. And the same could be said of Édouard Lalo, who owes his fame mainly to the violin concertos still performed to this day, including the Symphonie espagnole, a symphony which is really a concerto. The work’s many Spanish traits can perhaps be explained by the Spanish roots of the ancestors of this French composer, who was born in the Belgian Rijssel. But Lalo also composed operas (of which Le Roi d’Ys enjoyed particular popularity) and, like Saint-Saëns, a considerable amount of chamber music. But the Symphonie espagnole opus 21 remains his best-known work, as it was in his own day. And it was this piece that inspired Tchaikovsky several years later to write his only violin concerto.

Dvorak, Lalo Cello Concertos

“The unifying motif between these two Cello Concertos is a sense of yearning: from far away, Dvorák yearned for his homeland and an unfulfilled love, whereas Lalo yearned for the typically Spanish flair and the Mediterranean temperament. As I spend most of the year on tour, the sense of yearning is very familiar to me, it is my constant companion. Therefore, I am delighted that PENTATONE has provided me with a musical home port. And for my first release, I cannot imagine a better partner than Jakub Hrusa with the PKF – Prague Philharmonia.”
