The album title and cover photography were inspired by the song Zwielicht, which together with Mondnacht from the same Op. 39 cycle is often considered to be the epitome of German nineteenth-century Romanticism. It is also a fitting metaphor for Schumann’s troubled soul, constantly oscillating between light and dark, between hope and despair. Shedding a fascinating light on Schumann’s dark inner world, the recorded songs are both an expression of his profound love for his wife Clara and of euphoria after having overcome a period of severe mental disturbance. It is hard to think of better ambassadors for this repertoire than Ian Bostridge and Saskia Giorgini, whose acclaimed partnership has made them seasoned champions of the German lied.

Ian Bostridge is one of the most celebrated tenors and lied interpreters of his generation. His Pentatone recording of Schubert’s Winterreise(2019) was crowned with the ICMA Vocal Music Award 2020. Bostridge has since released Schwanengesang (2022), The Folly of Desire (2023) as well as Die schöne Müllerin (2020) and Respighi Songs (2021), both together with Saskia Giorgini, on the label. Giorgini’s Liszt recordings Harmonies poétiques et religieuses (2021) and Consolations (2023), as well as her Debussy recital album Images (2024), have all received extensive praise.

Both of these violin concertos were written for the legendary Joseph Joachim, who had a hand in shaping the final form of both pieces, although ultimately his changes to the Schumann were rejected by the composer.

The highly original, introverted and melancholic concerto is a moving self-portrait of the 43-year-old Schumann a few years before his death, and Bruch’s No. 1 is one of the most beloved concertos of the entire repertoire.

In Richard Strauss’s early Cello Sonata Op. 6, we hear flickers of his distinct musical personality sprouting amid cracks in a traditional Germanic facade. Not many works from Richard Strauss’s teenage years still get performed, but this one has become part of the repertoire. Piano and cello are woven tight here, in this case moving from the lyrical verve and heavy Brahmsian chords of the opening to a four-part fugue.

Mendelssohn’s easy lyricism can be heard in the Romance-like Larghetto while the same composer’s elfin lightness peers through Strauss’s final Allegro vivo. The idea of thematic unity and fluidity, already demonstrated by Schumann, is also present.

The genre of the Romance – lyrical with a touch of the sentimental was a favorite of Clara Schumann. So much of what Clara and her husband Robert wrote seems imbued with the idea of partnership; of one entity dependent on another.

Rachmaninov’s rarely recorded Moments musicaux com­plete this musical panorama to commemorate the 80th anniversary of his death.
