“One might ask: Does it make sense to record a Standard album in 2023, especially when the arrangements and the songs are not necessarily turned upside down? Well, for me it’s sort of a personal “best of” album of tunes, melodies I really love, but even more: playing standards for me is about getting to know the people I’m playing with, taking directions together on a common journey.

I could not be happier and more grateful that Jorge and Danny were open to explore these paths with me, I learn every time we get to play together. I really think curiosity is what keeps creativity alive, I sincerely hope that it will come across listening to this record.”

For her second album at NativeDSD, 2xHD and Resonance Records present vocalist Polly Gibbons and her album All I Can Do. It is exclusively available in Stereo DSD 512 at NativeDSD.

Polly Gibbons is a rising young British singer of Jazz, Blues, and Soul music. She has a sound and a style that give off sparks.

Her voice is raspy, raw, and full of heat; it sputters and growls, carves out funky grooves, and wails into the stratosphere. Improvisations tumble out of her. Whatever the tempo, Polly’s time and pitch are spot-on; no challenge throws her. And when she sings a quiet, sparsely arranged love song, she’s a no-frills storyteller of great heart.

This album, made before a live audience at the Manhattan recording studio Power Station, captures the excitement she created throughout 2018 at New York’s Birdland, The Montreal International Jazz Festival, the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival and London’s preeminent Jazz club Ronnie Scott’s.

2024 NativeDSD Album of the Year Award Winner – Jazz Vocals

Night is Jazz Singer Holly Cole‘s 3rd album on the 2xHD label at NativeDSD.  Following her earlier albums Holly and Girl Talk.

For her first album in five years, multiple award winner and internationally acclaimed Canadian jazz singer Holly Cole presents this conceptually ambitious piece of work with a unifying theme: an intimate collection of songs for the nighttime.

In trademark Holly Cole fashion, Night crosses different corners of the musical spectrum from the first focus track, a James Bond theme by John Barry (“You Only Live Twice“), to a Mort Shuman classic originally sung by Elvis Presley (“Viva Las Vegas“) to Tom Waits (“Walk Away“ and “Whistling Past The Graveyard“), Jacques Brel (“If You Go Away”) and Gordon Lightfoot (“If You Could Read My Mind“).

A song by late Sixties/early Seventies Canadian folk-pop duo The Poppy Family has gently found its way into the repertoire (“I Thought Of You Again“). All of this is complimented by an American songwriter/folk classic from the Danny O’Keefe songbook (“Good Time Charlie’s Got The Blues“), a riveting version of a Captain Beefheart tune (“Love Lies“), a timeless pop ballad previously sung by Art Garfunkel (“I Only Have Eyes For You“) and – a wonderful new Holly Cole original – “You’ve Got A Secret“.

It’s a fascinating collection of songs that delivers additional proof of Cole’s unique mastery of song interpretation, featuring a theme where she is truly at home. Eleven wonderful tracks for the special time between dusk and dawn. Holly Cole says “When we made this recording the band and I pushed well past normal studio hours. We worked deep into the night and journeyed to unexpected and surprisingly rewarding places.”

It is also a One Microphone Recording use a single AEA R88 Stereo Ribbon Microphone.

PapaJazz says “By now we’re having less arrangements, less preparation so that we can be more spontaneous, our focus is more on improvisation. The songs on this current album is mainly music from the 20s and 30s of America. This album is a time travel with dancing – a real ‘old school’ jazz with the most popular songs from the ‘20s, ’30s and ’40s.”

Sax Player Arpad Dennert, a member of PapaJazz and the Jazz band ArpiTalk tells us “PapaJazz regularly plays for Lindy Hoppers for many years. On this album we present a bunch of the most popular songs among dancers. Enjoy and let’s dance!”

The Dreamer features The Gabor Szalay Trio performing six Jazz Classics. Including Alone Together by Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz, There Will Never Be Another You by Harry Warren and Mack Gordon, Body And Soul by Johnny Green, Edward Herman, Robert Sour and Frank Eyton, Waltz New by Jim Hall, St. Thomas by Sonny Rollins and In Walked Bud by Thelonious Monk. The title track – The Dreamer – was written by Gabor Szalay.

The Dreamer was recorded in Pure DSD 256 Stereo and is exclusively available in Pure DSD Stereo at NativeDSD.Com

Gabor Szalay tells us the story behind this album “We were asked to record this album with a line-up of two guitars and a double bass by Mr. Róbert Zoltán Hunka of Hunnia Records. He had heard this material earlier when I played together in a trio with the late great guitar maestro, Gyula Babos and the excellent bass player, Viktor Hárs. This album is a tribute to that outfit.

We tried to recreate the spirit of the trio by using similar material. In place of the late Gyula Babos, my friend, the excellent István Gyárfás plays the other guitar. The material is made up of well-known standards with the exception of “The Dreamer” which was composed by myself earlier, but on the album, it’s dedicated to Gyula in memoriam. We only recorded just one take of each song and made absolutely no corrections afterwards in order to give it a live feel.

I would like to thank Pisti (“Gyaf”) and Viktor for their great playing. I would also like to thank my family – Mária and Imre Szalay, Beni Szalay and Erika.

2021 NativeDSD Album Of The Year – Funk & Soul

Funky Butt is Arnett Cobb’s final recording. Grammy Award winning Jazz Legend Arnett Cobb is an American music pioneer. His larger than life playing style separates him as a master saxophonist & icon. He was sometimes known as the “Wild Man of the Tenor Sax” because of his uninhibited stomping style.

Cobb, a Tenor Saxophone player from the 1940s who (like Illinois Jacquet) fused together some of the most exciting aspects of swing and early R&B, is in typically exuberant form on this quartet set with pianist Derek Smith, bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Ronnie Bedford. Cobb is warm on the ballads, but the stomps are what make this record most memorable.

The album features a host of standards including Jumpin’ At The Woodside by Count Basie, Satin Doll by Duke Ellington, Georgia On My Mind by Hoagy Carmichael & Stuart Carroll, I Got Rhythm by George & Ira Gershwin, September In The Rain by Al Dubin & Harry Warren, Isfahan by Billy Strayhorn and Radium Springs Swings by James Newton.

Game show fans will recognize Jumpin’ At The Woodside as the Theme for Gene Gene The Dancing Machine on The Gong Show with Chuck Barris.

This is an Analog Master Tape to Stereo DXD and Stereo DSD transfer by Rene Laflamme at 2xHD Mastering.

Since coming from Germany in the mid 1950s, Herb Pilhofer has spent much of the past 45 years as a successful commercial musician in Minneapolis, working as a hired gun in recording studios and at the Guthrie Theater. In recent years, though, he’s had the itch to get back to the creative improvising that inspired him as young man, so he’s returned to his roots with Full Circle.

A while back, I began to spend some time playing my Bosendorfer piano. Like I used to do in the days when and performing gave meaning to my life. And I knew what l had to do. I got rid of all the hi-tech stuff, started to work on some new music and formed the Pilhofer Jazz Quartet.

Now I am discovering absolute joy in making the music that I love to make as well as the privilege of playing with talents like Steve Yeager (Vibes), Gordy Johnson (Bass), and my talented son, Michael Pilhofer, (Drums). It’s all priceless!

I am forever grateful to Tom Jung, my former partner and friend, who encouraged me to do this album. For as long as I’ve known Tom, he has always been on a quest “for that perfect sound.” Lucky for the Pilhofer Jazz Quartet, he is still chasing that rainbow.

He recorded Full Circle in the best possible, most natural way, with the revolutionary, Direct Stream Digital (DSD) recording system. Recorded live, there are no overdubs and no tricks. Yes, you’ll hear an occasional clinker.  You’ll hear us breathe, even groans, but I hope that you will also hear us “smile!”

When I heard the first playback, I smiled because I realized “I was home”. In a very peculiar and fortuitous way. It seemed that actually two dimensions, the music and the sound had come full circle.

So here then is our very direct, no frills, Full Circle album! Very much from the heart…

Keep It Simple by Dick Haymes is the latest release from 2xhd Mastering-Jazzology Records. This is an Analog recording that has been transferred to DSD 256 by Rene Laflamme using the Merging Technologies Horus Analog to DSD 256 Converter.

Along with Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, Dick Haymes was one of the most popular crooners of the 1940s and 1950s. Keep It Simple combines tracks from two studio sessions in October 1976 and May 1978 made under the direction of Loonis McGlohon. They include standards like The More I See You, Little White Lies and The Very Thought of You along with selections from Brigadoon, State Fair, and The Goldwin Follies.

Dave Nathan from AllMusic says “Arguably the finest singer of ballads to grace the popular song scene, with the possible exception of Johnny Hartman, this album is a testimonial to a very unique talent and to a singing style that has practically become extinct.”

Here is a beautiful partnership between one of the more individual tenors from the swing era the distinctive Buddy Tate, and the always swinging Harry “Sweets” Edison who got the most mileage out of a single note and is immediately recognizable within a note or two for his long-used repetition and simplicity.
