A breath of fresh air!

You may have overlooked this one- I did! But that’s the reason I do these “Discoveries”. It’s an LP length release from an orchestra you might not have heard of, and you probably have more than one recording of Stravinsky’s Petrushka already. So imagine my surprise at finding this performance absolutely delightful!

The late 50s Boston recording by Pierre Monteux, who premiered the ballet, remains my personal favorite. But that doesn’t mean I can’t thoroughly enjoy others– and this one is a breath of fresh air!
I’ve never heard Petrushka sound so much like a precursor to the “pagan” Rite of Spring. This is music that paints a picture of a rural fair in a distant time, full of things to amaze people who were close to the Earth.

I recommend this recording highly with the following proviso: It is Stravinsky’s 1947 revision, which puts a bit more emphasis on the piano, and is a bit shorter than the original. The price is right,
the interpretation is refreshing, and the recording quality is fine. What’s not to like!
