How is the original? What makes something fake that is not real? How does the material treat us and how do we treat the material? How do we reuse what we don’t use but was once useful? Can it come to life what people breathe life into?  These are some of the questions we can ponder in relation to Ádám Meggyes’s album Underground Big Band Reconceptualizations, but the best, first of all, to allow ourselves to be sucked in by the music and drift off on a new, intergalactic fantasy journey.

If curiosity is sufficiently fueled and we have the courage, we can explore our own universes in the colors of the composer’s unique musical world, to see as far inside as James Webb telescope can see outside.

The author is a dramaturge with a sure taste and he leads the canter (which is not without free improvisation and experimentation, and which integrates a wide variety of styles from rock to afro-beat to sacred music) with a strong hand, so that we are guaranteed to arrive.

It doesn’t hurt to have a few pennies of sensitivity to uniqueness, a sentiment to life and an artistic desire for order, because anyone who brings these talents on the road with them can watch the film of their life if they close their eyes, or really open them.

Because it is – like the non-degradable plastic that you mould into a new shape from time to time to use again – what it is. Meggyes’s music is a takeaway for the everyday, a survival kit for the journey, to make the heart beating, the adrenaline pumping and the imagination working. Because life is exciting and it’s up to us to make it real.

Anyone with an eye for difference, who appreciates identity and loves novel connections, and who delights in colorful, free and pure expression that simply tells true stories, will enjoy the music of Ádám Meggyes, even when it’s complicated.

Nart Orchestra
Ádám Meggyes, Conductor
Sampo Hiukkanen, Alto Saxophone (track 4)

For many people Ben Webster is indelibly linked with the name of Duke Ellington. Ben had a long and distinguished career, of which his work with Duke was only a small part, but the crucial exposure just as he reached musical maturity was given by Ellington, and that maturity was hastened by the challenge of playing with Ellington. Yet he also gave a lot to the band and to the continuing Ellington tradition.

In other words, he created the role of the tenor saxophone with Duke. Before he joined for his longest stay (in January 1940), there had been no expectation of significant tenor contributions – despite Ben’s previous brief encounters in 1935 and 1936. But, in far less time than the 3 ½ years he remained, Ben had made the tenor an Ellingtonian voice almost as strong as Johnny Hodges and Harry Carney on alto and baritone. His departure left a huge hole in Duke’s music, which was filled by a series of heavyweight soloists including Al Sears, Jimmy Forrest, Don Byas, Ben again, and the great Paul Gonsalves.

MarV+ stands for the Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter quintet (V) and percussion (+). This is the brass quintet of the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy. From 2007 onwards the quintet bears the name of Netherlands’ illustrious Fleet Admiral De Ruyter.
In addition to the activities of the Marine Band, the members of MarV+ take part in services and concerts, on occasion in the presence of members of the Royal Family. During the past years performances also took place abroad in Curaçao, New York and France. In 2014 MarV+ featured in the film Michiel de Ruyter.
On this album we can hear a selection of the versatile repertoire of MarV+ with various arrangements that have not been recorded earlier. We hope you will enjoy listening to them!
