I made this recording at the Piaggio Museum located in Pontedera, the place where Piaggio was born and where it still continues to produce today. For this recording I brought all my equipment both analog (Ampex ATR 102 Electronic Tube Ampex Model 351-1965 2 tracks, 1/2 inch, 30ips modified by David Manley) and digital (Pyramix Recorder, dCS A/D and D/A converters).

Paul Stephenson has tried a variety of musical styles – from folk and country songs to what one reviewer once described as “pop in a different guise.” On Wireless Days, Paul is clearly in singer-songwriter mode.

On the album Paul Stephenson mainly plays acoustic guitar, but also occasionally bass, electric guitar and even banjo.

Luckily he sticks with a particularly great guitar from California luthier Jeff Traugott, with the exception of the German-built Lakewood he uses on “Almost.”

But what you hear isn’t just the singer-songwriter plucking his guitar. These are his songs also.

We didn’t want to rush the release of the DSD version, so we spent a little extra time refining the mix of the Analog Masters used for transfer into the DSD domain, with the utmost attention paid to delivering the highest quality possible with today’s technology.

As with the releases from HELIXIRx and Empty Triangles through our sub-label Same Great Sound Productions, we’ve taken the familiar sound of 80s synthesizers, drum machines and effects processors and given them the modern-day treatment through digital converters.

We’re once again proud to affirm our loyalty by releasing the DSD analog transfer exclusively through our good friends at NativeDSD and the supporters who have purchased our earlier DSD releases! In a completely acoustic version, accompanied by his historical travel companions the Radicanto, the Neapolitan singer Raiz crosses the whole Mediterranean. In a recital of author songs demonstrating that in music – as in culture – there are precious bridges between the various peoples that overlook the sea Nostrum which are a heritage to be preserved. The group offers imaginary Mediterranean mestizo music born from the meeting of Raiz (historical voice of Almamegretta) with Radicanto consolidated over the years with the realisation of tours and record works, finalists of the Tenco Award and in the Top Ten of the World Music Chart of Europe. Powerful and refined at the same time, the sound universe of the Neapolitan singer-songwriter’s voice intertwines with the cadenced rhythms, the echoes of the strings, the skins and the papyri, of the Radicanto to slip like rivulets of a story that seems to never end. Sephardi cantigas, psalms, Neapolitan songs, tango, North African and Middle Eastern rhythms: languages that chase each other, the Mediterranean as a pan-regional reality, without borders.

Among the songs played we find Astrigneme (G. Della Volpe, P.P. Polcari) who gives the title to the album, Cammina Cammina (P. Daniele) Era de maggio (J.Carreras, M.P.Costa) Jerusalem (Koné Seydou), and more.

Clark delivers delicate, fragile and very personal lyrics. She frames these with minimalist music. Her poetry tells of the sensual beauty in nature, the unfathomable in art and the courage to let go in life. Her poetry is spoken with care, letting the magic of her voice and every word work and unfold. The music enhances the poignancy of this poetry.

Her band member Justin Ciuche on violin, together with harpist Ulla van Daelen, recorded very reduced sounds in live sessions. These picturesque and beautiful settings let the poems of the language artist shine. In addition to her own texts, she recites poems by William Butler Yeats and Mary Coleridge.

Anne Clark on the new album Borderland: “In a place and time where so many of us have so little control over circumstances and events, I feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to develop and explore ideas and themes around language and music that spontaneously evolved in the great environment of the Stockfisch Records studio.

My co-writer and band member, violinist Justin Ciuche, approached me with the idea of going into the studio with harpist Ulla Van Daelen and recording a full “live” session – with no plan or prior arrangements other than a few notes with ideas for my lyrics.”
