This recording of one of Benny Goodman’s last concerts in Germany (which was held for NDR’s “Sunday Concerts” series) is much more than a newly discovered collector’s item for fans of the eternally young American swing tradition.

Using minimal recording equipment, recording engineer Günter Pauler made an exciting and even touching sound-document of Goodman’s world-class playing at the Hamburg Congress Centre on his last European tour in 1981. The impressive interplay between the (then) young Danish and Belgian musicians and the old master of classic jazz on the large stage of the CCH Hamburg showcases great mutual playing synergy and class.

Günter Pauler tells us “In the 80s I recorded a lot of concerts for the NDR radio show “The Sunday Concert“. The Benny Goodman concert at CCH Hamburg has especially stayed in my memory. I was sitting behind the stage curtains with a 7-channel mixer that I had built myself and a NAGRA IV-S reel-to-reel recorder. Benny Goodman approached me during a break. He must have sensed my strain caused by having to make a two-channel recording without seeing the stage, nor having made a soundcheck. He laid his hand on my shoulder and said something like “it will all be okay“…”

As the title notes, this is the Red Norvo Combo’s second DSD release from 2xHD, taken from the archives of Jazzology Records.  The initial Red Norvo Combo album, Vibes a la Red, is also available from NativeDSD Music (see link below).

This album was the direct result of the Odessa Jazz Party in Texas in which vibraharpist Red Norvo participated, joined by saxophonist Kenny Davern, pianist Dave McKenna, bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Mousey Alexander. Spread over six days, the Odessa Jazz Party brings together twenty or so musicians to play in various contexts. Red brought down the house with assistance by Davern and McKenna, who realized he was tired of making solo records. So, Red invited his friends to the studio in New York in 1975 to record two sessions for this, his second “Famous Door” series album, and here we have evidence of the strongly swinging music heard by the guests at Odessa. Features four previously unissued alternate takes.

“After making only one recording as a leader between 1960-1973, vibraphonist Red Norvo cut three albums for Famous Door during 1975-1977, launching a bit of a comeback. This album, his second Famous Door release, is an excellent effort. The veteran vibraphonist plays six veteran swing standards plus his own “Santa Monica Blues” with pianist Dave McKenna, bassist Milt Hinton, drummer Mousey Alexander, and (on four of the seven numbers) Kenny Davern on soprano sax. These small-group swing performances (which some would call “mainstream”) are quite enjoyable.” (Scott Yanow, AMG)

Ruud Breuls, Simon Rigter, Karel Boehlee, Jos Machtel and Marcel Serierse can play. No doubt about it. They belong to the absolute top of European Jazz. They have played with everybody who is somebody in the world of Jazz.

What really makes this album special is the love and dedication they bring to Louis Armstrong’s music. Listening to the 8 compositions presented here one realizes that genre is completely irrelevant. The 8 pieces of music were performed Live In The Studio in front of an audience of 80 people. The musicians were placed in front of a stereo pair of microphones with additional spot microphones on each instrument.

The musicians were playing without headphones, the reason being that we believe that when we get the musicians to play together in the same room, without headphones, it creates a number of musical and technical benefits. As they are not ‘separated’ by the headphones, the musicians, in order to hear each other are forced to create a natural and musical balance. A balance which is then easily captured by the main stereo pair of microphones.

Because of this natural and musical balance the need for compression to control levels is no longer necessary. Since everybody is in the same room, the boxed sound which is so common in many modern recordings is absent as the sound of the room helps ‘glue’ the sound of the recording.

The recording took place in the now legendary Studio 2, situated in the the building of the Dutch Music Centre of Broadcasters (MCO). It is the oldest recording studio in the Netherlands and has hosted a wealth of prominent artists; Django Reinhardt, was there in 1937, Jazz at the Philharmonic featuring Ella Fitzgerald in 1953, and in the 1960’ Wes Montgomery, Clark Terry and Eric Dolphy all recorded in the studio.

Ruud Breuls – Trumpet and Flugelhorn
Simon Rigter – Tenor Saxophone
Karel Boehlee – Piano
Jos Machtel – Double Bass
Marcel Serierse – Drums

If you believe to have found a room in which to hide the home mess amassing old toys or old clothes, we suggest you look elsewhere because in this special ‘Ripostiglio’ (closet) you’ll find anything.
Musica da Ripostiglio was founded by twenty-year collaboration between Luca Giacomelli and Luca Pirozzi.
When the two musicians present their music on stage, the audience, having fun, perceived to participate in a show rather than a concert in the traditional sense. This is the atmosphere captured by the registration of VDM entitled “Live in Capalbio 3.0”, on the occasion of the concert held in the famous Tuscan town.
The most advanced audio recording technology in DXD/DSD meets pure emotion of an artist reaching his audience unfiltered. This was possible thanks to Bio recording Direct to Disk Live, a certified technique that VDM Records provides to guarantee a “genuine” product; music is made available to the listener without alterations, without editing, without any “make up” that normally embellishes musical and artistic productions.
Musica da Ripostiglio as well as offering live music and shows, also creates music for film and children’s music collection in introductory music audiobooks, in a versatility which reflects the interests of Giacomelli and Pirozzi which offer a surprise on every shelf of this special Ripostiglio, the most musical and loved in Italy.
