Djabe returns to NativeDSD with Unplugged Live At The New Orleans.  Originally released on CD, the album is now available in Stereo Pure DSD 256 exclusively at NativeDSD. This edition was created using the Analog Master Tape of the original performance by Djabe.  It follows their earlier NativeDSD album release Art In Time.

In 2002 Djabe gave a series of concerts in the then most famous jazz club in Budapest, New Orleans. For eight nights the group played almost totally different sets. The last two nights were unplugged gigs. On November 19, 2002 Saïd Tichiti joined Djabe. These 9 tracks are taken from that show. The set covers the whole career of the band from their first album Djabe to Sheafs are Dancing creating a new and fresh approach of many classic and previously live unplayed Djabe tracks.

Jazz and World Music in Stereo Pure DSD 256 Exclusively at NativeDSD!

This album is a work of love, feeling, reflection, being attentive, watchful, just cruising in the moment, building loops, blocks, clouds that absorb the light from above and from within. A walk on a narrow path in the forest of interwoven soundscapes exploring what a violin can do with the help of a looper, electronics and some collaborating musical partners.

It’s not meant to be some sort of a “virtuoso achievement” though or any such showing off. It’s a lot of meditation in colors, musical thoughtfulness, grooves and space-time emptiness. It is also a look back on my journey so far, the influences, the infuse of streams in improvisation in the field of Jazz and World Music although somewhat independently from any particular genre.

Just bits and pieces of thoughts, some poetry, exploring the possibilities of my instrument which is the five-string electric violin. Composing for a solo project is always risky somehow. But I’ve had the joy and privilege of the participation of some brilliant guest musicians on this recording.

I am forever thankful to them as well as to my teachers and Gurus and the artists who paved the way for the improvising violinist before me.

There are many Seigen Onos. I’m writing about one of them here. But there are also a few different Seigens mixed in each of them. That’s why it’s complicated.

Seigen as a sound engineer, a musician, a cook, a friend, and a family man. What’s interesting is that when I first listened to the album “Olive Tree For Peace,” I felt a sense of variety, as if I was changing the radio channel. Station A, Station B, Station C, they’re actually “songs,” but they’re different, just like radio stations.

And not Japanese, but European, radio with a mix of various languages. I suddenly remembered Wim Wenders’ “Lisbon Story.” As I was traveling from Germany to Portugal, crossing the border, the radio was left on, and the music and words changed constantly. But on the other hand, I also thought that this is just one album.

The album title “Olive Tree for Peace” symbolizes Seigen Ono’s dream world. The stories of various people unfolding along the Mediterranean coast, and the fun lives of the people in the cities and countryside. Ono Seigen wants to say that peace is found in the ordinary time of everyday life.

War is boring no matter where you cut it. He wants to say that this is something that is taken for granted. Music cuts out the time of ordinary life and you come across a dreamlike world. Smiles fall naturally.

There is no story that connects each photo. It’s a series of fragments. Dreams are born there again. I suddenly think that stories might be what spin the war. But time flows. It flows in Seigen Ono’s dreams, and in the gentle time of his memories, only the laughter of people can be heard.

The music is of familiar landscapes passing by, but there is nothing to indicate a specific location. It is a fictional town, like Hayao Miyazaki’s anime. Interestingly, when he plays in Europe, he is reminded of the familiar landscapes of a strange country.

There are many wonderful musical moments in this album. The best of them all are the children’s songs. There is a child who continues to sing outside the chorus. He continues to sing because he enjoys it. Yes, the innocent dream behind that innocent voice is surprising. The child is probably a self-portrait of Seigen Ono.

Composed and Produced by Seigen Ono

Aubrey Logan’s Where the Sunshine is Expensive is her second album at NativeDSD. On this album, Aubrey Logan is joined by special musical guests Dave Koz and Casey Abrams.

It is Exclusively available in Stereo DSD 512 at NativeDSD thanks to our signature Higher Rates Program.

The album follows Ella On Our Mind with The L.A. Network and Bill Cantos.  Both albums are from 2xHD and Resonance Records. She is also featured on the Jazz Ballads, Volume 3 and Girl Power, Volume 1 sampler albums – also available at NativeDSD.

Where The Sunshine Is Expensive topped Billboard’s charts as #1 of the Contemporary Jazz genre. Coined “The Queen of Sass” in the press, Logan was a featured guest vocalist on Dave Koz‘s #1 selling contemporary jazz 2018 album, ‘Summer Horns II: From A to Z‘. Her debut solo 2017 album ‘Impossible‘ charted in the Top 10 on the iTunes and Billboard jazz charts.

The album was recorded live at the legendary East West Studios in Los Angeles in front of an intimate audience and captures an exciting blend of Pop, Jazz and R&B tunes, that tell a story about Hollywood from Logan’s unique perspective.

In addition to original songs composed by Aubrey Logan, the album also features her performances of Alfie by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Put It Where You Want It by Joe Sample and I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near) written and made famous by Singer, Composer and Keyboard Player Michael McDonald.

Dave Koz says, “Aubrey is that rare artist who comes along once in a very long while. She truly makes you stop in your tracks. With such a communicative voice and style and a great sense of musical adventurousness, combined with unmatched technique, there’s really no emotion she can’t tackle musically. She’s the total package. Oh, and then there’s the trombone! She’s in a class all by herself.”

2023 NativeDSD Album of the Year – Rock

Exit North‘s second studio album Anyway, Still continues the quartet’s appetite for exploring provocative song structures.

Weaving classic elements such as piano and strings into the layered threads of the bands material. Where intimacy and atmospherics give way to powerful dynamics, animated rhythms and grooves, driving distortions and crescendos in cinematic scale.

Like excavators with uncompromising autonomy, Exit North relish the exploration of every nuance and detail of the recorded performance.

Sounds of Diversity is the ninth record of the multi-award winning Elemér Balázs Group. Its title refers to the fact that the highly melodic original compositions fuse the members’ distinctive musical worlds in special ways, with results that appeal to a wide audience.

Pat Metheny says “In my opinion Elemér is one of the best drummers today. He plays with incomparable musicality and fineness. He is able to listen to every single musical moment with such attention, he is able to make such fine and spontaneous decisions on stage, that only encourages the quality of the play of the other musicians. He reaches out of his instrument with great taste. I always play with him with joy and so do I listen to his music.”

The Elemér Balázs Group, one of the most popular jazz bands in Hungary, was founded in 2000 by Elemér Balázs, a jazz drummer of international reputation. The band, consisting of highly qualified jazz musicians, has achieved great results at home (e.g. Fonogram Prize in 2005), and has built upon its success through impressive performances at prestigious European jazz festivals (e.g. Vienna, London, Berlin, The Hague, Prague, Bratislava, Skopje).

The Group has created a strikingly unique melodious sound underscored by interesting rhythmic patterns, and given a fascinating texture by the tonal contrast of the male and female lead-vocals. Their music is extremely versatile owing to their spirited blending of jazz and the folk-music of the region. It’s ethno-jazz at its best, inspired by highly divergent musical cultures. This variety characterizes the four albums released by the Group so far. Each of these albums creates a completely unique atmosphere, a musical world of its own. According to critics the music of the Elemér Balázs Group is something one can enjoy in any mood or situation.

Two words. “Nada Brahma” – the world is sound. Sound is God. Two words, but not only words defined as an attempt to describe something you cannot otherwise perceive. It’s the chronoglyph of time in a constant flow of sequential rhythm.

Like in a mantra, a hidden code is unlocked and manifests itself in whatever you pronounce. Pulse is omnipresent in the act of self- preservation itself. Two words. The syllables of background radiation, the blueprint of everyday banalities, like tiny stickers on the wall.

Like future memories. Like you left the coffee on the table. Two words: coffee, table. Whatever you say. Just the same.

Turning Point is a newly remastered Jazz album by the Tonu Naissoo Trio from APSoon Recordings.  It originally appeared on the market as a Vinyl LP.  The album was recorded by Enn Laidre and released by the Melodyia label.

Turning Point refers to an altered cast as well as new ventures in music. With one exception (Ornette Coleman’s Lonely Woman), the pieces on the album are Naissoo’s own compositions from 1977 to 1980. They range from intimate ballads to post-bop and are characterized by intense rhythmics and intertwined ensemble play. Fresh color is added by the Rhodes electric piano enriching and modernizing the sound, and by experiments with the musical lineup.

The album is the first in a new series of albums titled Estonian Jazz from APSoon Recordings.  Patterned after their earlier Estonian Organs series of DSD releases at NativeDSD. As part of the new Estonian Jazz series, APSoon will release the best of Estonian Jazz that has been recorded on Analog Audio media.
