A genuine masterpiece inspires musicians to adopt, adapt, or transcribe it without losing any of its greatness. Nevermind’s four baroque aces, Anna Besson, Louis Creac’h, Robin Pharo and Jean Rondeau, have taken a creative look at Bach’s famous Goldberg Variations and have made their own stylishly insightful ‘variations’ on the work

As they themselves explain: ‘We needed only an informal rehearsal to grasp the incredible potential of a transcription for our ensemble. There have been other arrangements, but nobody has ever attempted this one before now, even though our instruments are among those most typically used in J.S. Bach’s chamber music, in his many solo sonatas for flute, violin or gamba with bass continuo and obbligato harpsichord – and they also frequently feature in the arias of his cantatas and Passions.

Anna Besson – Traverso
Transverse flute by Jean-Jacques Melzer after a model by Palanca.

Louis Creac’h – Violin
Violin by Hendrik Jacobs (Amsterdam, ca. 1680), with a bow by Paul Herrera (Nakasaya, 2022).

Robin Pharo – Viola da Gamba
Seven-stringed viola da gamba by Judith Kraft (Paris, 2012) after a model by Guillaume Barbey,
with a bow by Fausto Cangelosi (Florence, 2020).

Jean Rondeau – Harpsichord & Organ
Harpsichord after German models by Jonte Knif & Arno Pelto (2006).
Harpsichord based on various Italian instruments of the late 17th century by Philippe Humeau (Barbaste, 2016).
Organ of the Ricercar Consort: in the 17th-century German style, built by Luc Meurice (Saint-Louis, 2019),
modeled on various instruments by Nikolaus and Andreas Manderscheidt (Nuremberg, 1611–1672)
and on the organ by Esaias Compenius (Frederiksborg, 1610).

Celebrating the label’s 40th anniversary, Foné is releasing an equally special product – Fonè 40th Anniversary: 1983-2023. The album contains the most significant tracks representing the large Foné catalog of Classical, Jazz and Pop songs.

Among the artists represented are Salvatore Accardo, Ruggero Raimondi, Orchestra e Coro dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Myung-whun Chung, Scott Hamilton, Musica Nuda, Fausto Mesolella, Enzo Pietropaoli and more!

For this album Giulio Cesare Ricci used a Pyramix Recorder, dCS Analog to Digital and Digital to Analog converters. For these recordings Ricci used a “field effect” recording technique, natural sound, without the use of equalizers, no sound expansion and compression systems….. all this to bring the listener to live again in his home Hi-Fi system. The live effect as if the listener was present at the recording.

Great realism, great dynamics and great music!

APSoon Recordings proudly presents Tallinn Cathedral Organ by well-known organist Aare-Paul Lattik.  It follows his earlier album St. Paul’s Church Organ In Tartu which is also available at NativeDSD.

The album presents complex organ music works by composers Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986), Gabriel Pierné (1863-1937), and Jules Grison (1842-1896). The peculiarity of this album is that this church sounds very spacious and soft in the recording. It gives listeners the impression of a very large cathedral.

Although it has been clearly established for which instruments the Musical Offering and the Art of Fugue were intended, Bach’s Musical Offering has continued to be the object of realizations for other instruments, such as Anton Webern’s orchestrated version of the Ricercar à 6.

Here Cindy Castillo marks the completion of a new organ in the German baroque style by Dominique Thomas in the church of Saint-Loup in Namur with her own realization of this work. A monument to the late Baroque style.

Organist and pianist James McVinnie makes his Pentatone debut with Dreamcatcher, an intimate sequence of contemporary classical music centered around the act of imagining. The recording features the organ of St Albans Cathedral—an epoch-making instrument closely associated with legendary organists Peter Hurford and Ralph Downes. The piano segments of the album were recorded on a Steinway D of exceptional beauty at Studio Richter Mahr, co-founded by composer Max Richter and visual artist Yulia Mahr.

A mesmerizing sonic trip, Dreamcatcher reflects the unique artistic persona of McVinnie, whose mastery of core organ repertoire extends to an extensive body of work written for him by leading contemporary classical composers, as well as collaborations in the world of electronic and experimental music. The album features works by Nico Muhly, Meredith Monk, Laurie Spiegel, John Adams, inti figgis-vizeuta, Gabriella Smith, Glies Swayne, Bryce Dessner & Marcos Balter.

The album’s title is taken from Marcos Balter’s work of the same name, written in response to the child separation crisis at the US-Mexico border in 2018 — “dreamers” being the name given to children separated from their families by the Trump administration’s immigration policy.

This album also presents the first ever recording of Giles Swayne’s Riff-raff made on the St Albans organ for which the work was written in 1983 — McVinnie’s rendition embodying a perfect synergy between the piece’s minimalist roots and the modernist tonal philosophy of this instrument.

Through his boundless approach to music making, innovative programming and captivating musicianship, James McVinnie has carved out a unique career as an organist and keyboard player.

“This album is very close to my heart and has been a long time in the making. It represents both my current interests in new, mainly American music, and also a kind of document of my friendships and associations with composers of many of the works on the album. Over the past few years I have reconnected with the piano playing, having primarily worked as an organist in the first part of my career. This album presents me at both instruments.” – James McVinnie

Giulio Caccini played a decisive role in the birth of the solo madrigal. He not only accompanied himself as he sang them, but also formed the Concerto Caccini with his wife and children; this ensemble would go as far as to leave its mark on the French court. This double album features some of Caccini’s finest works as well as pieces by his two daughters Francesca and Settimia. It also provides the perfect opportunity for Scherzi Musicali to assemble some thirty instruments and to present the combinations of instruments used for the continuo group that developed around 1600.

Embark on a captivating musical adventure with “Voyage,” an album from the Organ Music Specialists at Base2 Music that explores the rich world of organ music at Saint Ouen, Rouen on one of the greatest organs in the world.

Featuring the talents of Jean-Baptiste Monnot, a protege of renowned organists Jean Guillou and Olivier Latry from Notre Dame Cathedral, this album offers a unique blend of traditional and innovative sounds and featuring in the mix, the ultrasonic contributions of the bats who flew during the recording.

The album is Exclusively Available in Stereo and 5.1 Channel Surround Sound DSD 256, DSD 128 and DXD plus Stereo DSD 512 from NativeDSD.

At the heart of the album is the Grand organ, the 1890 ‘michaelangelo’ masterpiece crafted by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, known for its thunderous 32ft Contra Bombarde stop. This organ, often regarded as one of the world’s most thrilling and frequently recorded instruments, captivates listeners with its powerful and unique sound complimented by the 130 metre long Abbey’s superb acoustics.

The second part of the album introduces L’orgue du Voyage, a portable organ built by Jean-Baptiste Monnot, featuring an all Bach programme. Recorded in immersive 5.1 surround sound, the emphasis is on enveloping the listener in between the pipe modules as they surround you.

Produced by Jake Purches for Base2 Music, the album was recorded with a 100 kHz bandwidth, utilising Sennheiser MKH8020 omni-directional microphones and recorded in 32-bit linear at 352.8 kHz PCM (DXD), the recordings capture every detail of the music with exceptional resolution. This level of resolution allows listeners to experience the full spectrum of sound up to 50kHz, from the powerful bass notes of the organ to the delicate harmonies and harmonics. In addition to the musical performances, the recordings reveal the presence of bats calling amidst the organ’s melodies.  The bats sing at 47 to 80 kHz, and a coda was made at the end of the album with a tenfold reduction to bring the bat song into our own audio range, adding an unusual touch to the album’s atmosphere

The album features classic pieces such as Widor’s 6th Allegro, showcasing the Grand organ’s commanding and powerful presence with its famous 32ft contra-bomarde, then more gentle Bach, Brahms and increasing in power with César Franck’s Pièce héroique followed by a brand new composition by producer Jacob Purches who under the touch of Jean-Baptiste Monnot, explores the organ’s subtleties and sonic depths in his ‘Prelude, Passacaglia and Lament’.
