Two fundamentally different symphonies: both works explore feelings from an entirely different point of view. The Fourth is about human feelings and moods: obsession, love (what a melody in the second movement!), happiness, fun, wit, (Beethoven’s most humorous finale!). The Sixth is about feelings that nature awakens in us: calmness, meditation, thankfulness.It has been an especially creative process to work on these masterpieces. We discovered that the Fourth Symphony sounds better with natural horns and trumpets. In the Pastorale we used a different seating arrangement, with the winds scattered among the strings, so that each soloist was surrounded by musicians playing the flow of Beethoven’s nature music. After the storm, when we hear the first tentative horn call with a bagpipe-like accompaniment, suggesting signals across the mountains, we found it appropriate to answer with a solo violin, which is gradually joined by the whole orchestra. C’est cette fois au Beethoven “léger” des 4e et 6e symphonies qu’est consacrée cette cure de rajeunissement. Très classique de ton mais implacable dans sa vigueur rythmique, la 4e va droit au but soutenue par de superbes interventions en clair obscur des bois. Quant à la Symphonie Pastorale, c’est tout l’orchestre qui y rugit avec une vitalité débordante, des sonorités coruscantes dans une sorte d’hédonisme de la nature qui fait chaud au coeur.

het meest opvallen de karakteristiek van Fischer’s Beethoven is de zorgvuldige afwerking van de klank, gekoppeld aan een soepele omgang met tempo.

in de Vierde een Adagio vol onopgesmukte poëzie geworden die rechtstreeks tot het hart spreekt, met die sublieme dialogen tussen strijkers en blazers die het hart doen smelten. In de hoekdelen staan alle neuzen perfect in dezelfde richting, alles staat echt ‘recht onder elkaar’, het is van het eerste tot het laatste akkoord spatgelijk, met een enorme ritmische drive die bijna dat gebaar van “wie doet mij wat.” uitstraalt. Het is ‘power play’ van de goede soort, het soort jongensachtige stoerheid dat aanstekelijk werkt (…) De Zesde: het lijkt wel alsof Fischer er met zijn troepen eveneens middenin staat, zo overtuigend brengt hij dat unieke, in muziek gevatte landleven over het voetlicht. (…) Jared Sacks en Hein Dekker hebben er, in het kunstpaleis in Budapest weer erg veel werk van gemaakt en een mooie opname afgeleverd, de zoveelste op rij. Een aanrader, dit Beethoven-tweetal uit de stal van Fischer en zijn Budapest Festival Orchestra. Of dit een Beethoven-cyclus gaat worden? Welzeker!
Klassieke Zaken
een aantrekkelijk werk dat geen zwak moment kent. Iván Fischer en zijn Boedapest Festival Orkest weten wel raad met de compositie in een gedreven interpretatie die de eenvoudige melodie een grote klankschoonheid verleent. De grillige, burleske elementen in het Scherzo en de Finale zijn niet minder bevlogen gedoseerd. Fischer staat volkomen boven de stof. Daarna komt de Pastorale als een grote idylle tot leven, slechts onderbroken door het donderende geweld van het onweer, dat snel komt en even snel oplost in de verte. De dirigent zorgt voor uitgebalanceerde orkestgroepen en vooral in de doorwerking van het eerste deel voor verrassende contrapunten. De ontelbare opnamen van de symfonieën van Beethoven bewijzen dat geen enkele dirigent er een definitief laatste woord over kan zeggen. (…) deze nieuwe interpretatie van Iván Fischer behoort tot de beste van dit moment. Alle lof overigens voor de warme, mooie registratie.

The results are spectacular, and the same seating arrangements were employed at the concert series in advance of this recording to much acclaim. (…) (…) this very well might be the best sounding disc of Beethoven (…) I give this disc five stars – it hits on all cylinders, and the performances are every bit the equal of the superb sound. You’ll be hard pressed to find a more emotionally involving, yet technically perfect performance. Very highly recommended sound.

The strings are plumper than we’ve come to expect from recent Beethoven cycles but the Budapest Festival Orchestra can still deliver at the composer’s original metronome markings. Conductor Iván Fischer only invokes fevered revolution at certain moments and elsewhere concentrates on well-argued phrases and a general sense of wonderment. Woodwind and brass detailing is excellent throughout, while the sublime close leaves you itching to hear Fischer’s Seventh.
