A Fine Line In Between is a new album by Roland Heidrich & The Abstract from Hunnia Records. The album features music that is a mixture of Avant Garde Jazz, Progressive Rock and bitter-sweet Hungariana.
Although The Abstract plays Roland’s compositions and musical concepts, these serve mostly as a canvas for further possibilities and creativity. Their music responds to a broad band of genres, styles, and emotions.
It is among their goals to play the widest variety and range of musical genres possible. The themes that could be easily recognized as “songs”, provide the framework for an adventure, where the trio setting gets to display the band’s music in a broad variety of styles and moods.
This is a Pure DSD release – recorded in Stereo DSD 256 by Producer Róbert Zoltán Hunka and Recording Engineer Gábor Halász using the Hapi Analog to Digital Converter from Merging Technologies.
The other DSD bit rates (DSD 512, DSD 128, DSD 64) were created in the DSD Domain by NativeDSD Mastering Engineer Tom Caulfield at the NativeDSD Mastering Labs using the Signalyst HQ Player 4 Pro mastering software with no DXD processing.
Roland Heidrich
Roland Heidrich is a Hungarian experimenter guitarist and composer, whose music and playing has broad influences from Modern Jazz, Blues, Progressive Rock to Avant Garde and free improvised music. He played acoustic guitars for 10 years, explored the opportunities on the 8-string classical guitar, 16 string guitar and fretless 8 strings, before his return to the electric guitar and his original sound imaginations.
In the last couple of years, he has mostly played electric guitar. He played with artists including István Grencsó, Róbert Benkő, Alf Wilhelm Lundberg, Ralf Gauck, Zoltán Lantos, Thomas Gundermann, Mark Wingfield, and Kevin Kastning.

There are some consistently high-quality and interesting recordings coming out of Hungary’s SuperSize Recording Studio and Hunnia Records, and this one by guitarist and experimenter Roland Heidrich is a fine example.
Heidrich blurs the lines between Jazz, Progressive, and the music of his native Hungary. Here he lays it all down with an easy groove, courtesy of his able sidesmen Csaba Pengő on bass, and drummer Zsolt Sárvári Kovács, on opening tracks ‘Guru’ and ‘Radio’. The trio is aided and abetted by a couple of hugely inventive sax players – János Ávéd on tenor and soprano, Gergő Kováts on baritone – who occasionally take flight, the three principals stepping back and keeping the rhythm motoring.
Then there are gentle moments such as the guitar/sax duo of ‘This Is A Song’ – which indeed it is, but a quite simple and effective one – and the flat-out charging bonkers ness and complexity of the appropriately-titled ‘Crazy’, which closes the album, with the performers soaring off in all directions and each taking a solo in classic jazz-gig style.
It all comes together to create a set as innovative as it is energizing, and with a real live feel captured in the studio by engineer Gábor Halász straight to Stereo DSD 256. It’s a fresh and powerful sound, and always fascinating.
