Here, we present Base2 Music’s first album featuring cellist Emilia Baranowska performing Bach’s Suites No. 1 in G major (BWV 1007) and No. 3 in C major (BWV 1009). This recording is available in two versions and when you purchase both versions with this DSD Bundle you will receive the discount.
The DSD Session Recording was recorded at ‘Burletts’, the home of Humphrey Avon in Bramber, West Sussex. This is a Pure DSD 128 album and is being released exclusively on NativeDSD in DSD 512, DSD 256, DSD 128 and DSD 64. This program was also recorded during a concert, you can find this version here.
The DXD Concert Recording was recorded at St. George’s Church in West Grinstead, West Sussex, in front of an audience of approximately 90 people. The sound was recorded in DXD 352.8 kHz sampling at 32 bits integer in multi-channel audio, which includes sounds from the audience. The program is the same as the DSD Studio Session Recording, but the interpretation is quite different. It is interesting to compare the private recording in a house with the live performance in a church.

(…) Emilia is a gifted musician with a respectable track record. That said, Bach aficionados, having already multiple sets of his Solo Suites on their shelves, will be looking for something that makes her reading stand out from the crowd. What struck me most during my listening tests and comparison sessions, was her style of playing; a style that concurs with the skilled sobriety of the Great Master. It kind of fits in with the chosen surroundings of a village parish church and a room in a stately country house. Though both are distinct, the common denominator is honesty. Emilia Baranowska’s performance is in my view best defined as a genuine display of sincere pureness. (…)

These are two separate performances of the same music, by the same musician, one live, the other in a recording session, and each in a different venue. The DSD128 recording was made at ‘Burletts,’ the home of Humphrey Avon in Bramber, West Sussex. The DXD recording is of a live performance at St. George’s Church in West Grinstead, West Sussex, in front of an audience of approximately 90 people.
So…, different venues, different acoustics, different digital recording formats, same artist, same microphones, same recording engineer. Not at all any sort of controlled comparison. But still a fascinating study in the different sounds. Choose one to just enjoy the music, choose the bundle to enjoy the comparisons/contrasts. Will you have a favorite? I think I do, but I change my mind from listen to listen…
Born in Sofia, Emilia Baranowska began piano lessons at the age of four… At the age of nine, Emilia switched to the cello and became a student of the great Bulgarian cellist Zdravko Yordanov, a disciple of Rostropovich…
I find her most enjoyable and engaging in these works. She has a delicate, light touch, with expansive phrasing. Her approach to the music reminds me so much as being in flight, soaring, and free. Never pedantic, never dry, never over-indulgent either. I’ve been quite enjoying these performances. And the recording quality is top notch.
