2023 NativeDSD Album of the Year – Classical Solo Instrumental
Rachmaninoff presents works by Sergei Rachmaninoff, performed by the critically acclaimed British pianist Sebastian Stanley.
These works have been associated closely with Sebastian his entire performing life, having been at the heart of many of his early career competition successes. They include the monumental but highly underrated Variations on a theme of Chopin and the seldom performed Nocturnes.
Sebastian’s previous albums by Albeniz and Granados have been praised with 5 star reviews in many major magazines such as Fanfare, the American Record Guide, Carnet Critique and Musical Pointers. With this new Hi Resolution release for HR recordings, he dips his toe into the world of one of the great pianist-composers of the Romantic era. It marks the start of a great collaboration between Sebastian Stanley and HR recordings, with many and diverse new recordings to come.

This new album by the acclaimed British Pianist, Sebastian Stanley is truly worthy of note. The playing characterizes the romantic, but never overly sentimental sides to Rachmaninoff’s music and pianism, perfectly.
The tone is expertly captured, with the High Definition quality providing an insight into Sebastian’s articulations and pedaling, which I find to be sensitive and never over done.
The choice of repertoire is really enlightening. I especially enjoyed the Nocturnes and the underrated Chopin Variations, in which Sebastian’s musical voice is clearly heard.
