West Side Story is a new Pure DSD Stereo release from the Bernardi-Fumagalli-Gattone Trio on Forward Music Italy.  It is the third DSD album at Native DSD featuring Double Bass player Renato Gattone – following the earlier albums Les Chats Noir (The Black Cats) and Gypsy Jazz Trio.

The history of American musicals has always been connected to Jazz music: musicians like Gershwin, Porter, Berlin gave vital and precious lymph to the African American musical repertoire with their works and musical theatricality. At first, Leonard Bernstein is an exception, because he does not appear in jazz songbooks as often as the above-mentioned colleagues.

Nevertheless, he left some absolute masterpieces, full of engaging and touching arias. Among them, West Side Story decisively stands out as a poetical and heartbreaking modern revision of Romeo and Juliet. The Bernardi-Fumagalli-Gattone Trio based their repertoire on the most famous and evocative songs of such a precious musical: Maria, America, Tonight Cool, and Somewhere are unforgettable songs of Bernstein’s musical world.

The tunes are played as jazz standards, but always with their own characteristic atmospheres.

All tracks were recorded live in studio with DSD technology and no overdubs. This album stayed within the DSD domain throughout the recording, mastering, delivery, and upload processes. This is a Pure DSD release, recorded in Stereo DSD 128 by Andrea Secchi.

The recording of the album was carried out with a Neve 88R Analog Console and the Merging Technologies Pyramix system in Stereo DSD 5.6 MHz (DSD 128). The mixes, like the recording, were made on the Neve 88R console and then acquired again on the Merging Technologies Pyramix system in Stereo 5.6 MHz (DSD 128). The mastering was carried out by reproducing the mixes from the Merging Technologies Pyramix system in Stereo DSD 5.6 MHz (DSD 128), working with it completely in the analog domain and then reacquiring it in the same system, at Stereo DSD 5.6 MHz (DSD 128).

The DSD 512, DSD 256 and DSD 64 editions of the album were created by Tom Caulfield, Mastering Engineer at the NativeDSD Mastering Lab using the Signalyst HQ Player 4 Pro mastering tools.
