True Audiophile Volume 1 is Groove Note’s first audiophile ‘Best Of’ collection. It features a delectable selection of some of their best sounding and most popular super audiophile cuts including Jacintha’s “Danny Boy”, Eden Atwood’s “Meditation,” Roy Gaines’ “Stormy Monday” and Anthony Wilson’s “She’s So Heavy”.
The album highlights include: The intimate, delicate, sweet, and tender voice of Jacintha; vocalist Roy Gaines, the greatest living blues guitarist that you don’t know anything about, a sizzling blues guitarist with one of the most magnificent blues voices around; Eden Atwood, who has a voice that is many things – seductive, plaintive, sensitive, gifted with perfect intonation and phrasing, and entertaining. With a sensual and seductive voice right out of the ’40s or ’50s, Luqman Hamza (pronounced Luke-mahn Hahm-za) is a real discovery;
Turning to the instrumental side of things Groove Note has Anthony Wilson, known best as the Guitarist for Diana Krall, he is one of the most talented musicians working in the US jazz scene today. Bill Cunliffe is a leading West Coast Jazz pianist and arranger with several albums to his credit. Rounding out this already impressive list is tenor saxophonist extraordinaire Bennie Wallace!
Note: All 14 tracks are presented in Stereo DSD 512, DSD 256, DSD 128, DSD 64.
7 of these Tracks are also available in Multichannel DSD 256, DSD 128 and DSD 64, these are # 1, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10 and 12. Notes | We are pleased to announce the availability of Groove Note releases in DSD 128 and DSD 256, in addition to the original DSD 64 releases. These higher bit rate DSD 128 and DSD 256 releases are all pure DSD created. They are not up samplings, for there are no PCM or DXD conversions involved in their production. They are re-modulations of the original DSD 64 encoding modulation that produced the DSD 64 releases. The sonic advantage to these new Stereo and Multichannel DSD 128 and DSD 256 releases, as with all higher DSD bit rate releases, is the wider frequency passband prior to the onset of modulation noise.This results in the listener’s DAC using gentler and more phase linear filters for playback of the music. This is an excellent sounding DSD recording that contains some standout system demo tracks.
I expect that a sampler from this ‘audiophile label’ would sound good and it does shine here. The wide soundstage and wonderful holographic image make this a sonic delight. If you have the system, your speakers should disappear. Each instrument has a firm position with air that surrounds them. If your system is set up and can reproduce it, it will sound like you are right there. Very immediate.
The big surprise is how much I enjoyed the music. Nice playing this disc from start to finish. That is not always the case on samplers. ‘She’s So Heavy’ and ‘Stormy Monday’ are standouts. A very nice blend of vocals, jazz, and blues.
Recommended and currently in rotation.
