Jazz Pianist Tzumo Arpad Olah is featured on the Tzumo Jazz Trio‘s album Tzumo Jazz Trio Plays Pat (Music of Pat Metheny). On Tzumo Jazz Trio Plays Pat (Music of Pat Metheny), the trio performs nine of Jazz Legend Pat Metheny’s best known compositions. It follows his earlier Pure DSD 256 Stereo release Hungarian Folk Songs and the album Dialogue where he plays the synthesizer on one track with the Egri-Pluto Basses. Both of these albums are also available from NativeDSD.
In designing his first piano trio outing in two decades, Tzumo Arpad Olah let chance guide him. He happened to find a collection of Pat Metheny compositions lying around at home a year ago, and in no time at all found himself deep in rehearsals. Ever since Bright Size Life (from which two pieces are covered on the album), Tzumo has believed Metheny to be an important composer, ranking with the likes of Shorter and Hancock.
He pulls gems from over 25 years of Metheny’s career, from those early days to the Pat Metheny Group repertoire of the early 2000’s. On Tzumo Jazz Trio Plays Pat he is joined by long-time collaborator Josef ’Pluto’ Horvath on bass. Pluto is a first-call bass guitarist in Hungary but is mostly featured on upright in this intimate acoustic setting. Rounding out the trio is Ferenc Nemeth, New York City-based Hungarian drummer and Tzumo’s classmate at Berklee. Nemeth, besides composing and leading his own band, has been also playing and recording with acclaimed artists as Lionel Loueke, Billy Childs, Herbie Hancock, Dhafer Youssef and Joshua Redman.
The result is an absolutely charming and shining collection of straight-ahead takes on melodies, wherein the trio shares their magical take on these tunes. They have the freedom and familiarity of jazz standards, but celebrate each element which make them unique.
Pat Metheny said “I love what you did with the music! Thank you so much for including me in your musical world and pusuits. It is really the most gratifying thing I can imagine that musicians at your level think of playing the tunes like that. It is really an honor for me.”
