2021 NativeDSD Album of the Year Award – Swing Jazz
Friends Talk is an album from the Jazz group ArpiShow on the Hunnia label. ArpiShow is a Jazz Swing orchestra founded in 2017 by clarinet-saxophone artist Árpád Dennert with the aim of providing the kind of easily accessible, yet artistically high-quality performance of traditional Jazz and Swing music which he loves, and which is popular with the audience. The group’s motto is “Pure Swing, Nothing Else!”
This is a Live to Stereo Pure DSD 256 Recording that is exclusively available from NativeDSD Music in Pure DSD. In addition to the recorded DSD 256 bit rate, the other DSD bit rates have been created in the DSD Domain using the Signalyst HQ Player 4 Pro mastering tools by Tom Caulfield at the NativeDSD Mastering Lab.
Friends Talk features the title track written by Arpad Dennert along with a number of classics from the American Songbook. The selections include Them There Eyes, Young At Heart (made famous by Frank Sinatra), Makin’ Whoopee, I’ve Found A New Baby, Shine, Goodnight My Love and The Pink Panther Theme written by Henry Mancini.

This is just huge load of fun to listen to. The group’s motto is “Pure Swing, Nothing Else!” And they certainly do. It’s a great set. Just let your toes tap, your head bob, a smile light your face, and enjoy!
The recording is a classic “glass booth and headphones-on” studio recording, so there is no natural soundstage to it. But the sound quality otherwise is excellent. Recording engineer Gábor Halász delivers some outstandingly clean, clear sonics in the Pure DSD256 release. His work has been consistently excellent in both this album and in a number of the other Pure DSD releases from Hunnia. If you see him credited, you can have high confidence the album will be a great recording sonically.

2021 Album of the Year Winner – Swing Jazz
ArpiShow is a 6-member Swing Jazz orchestra formed in 2017 by clarinet and saxophone player Arpad Dennert (hence the name “ArpiShow”). The group’s motto is “Pure Swing, Nothing Else!”
Friends Talk features 13 tracks and almost 1 hour of Swing Jazz music. Some tracks are purely instrumental while others also include a vocalist.
I found Friends Talk to be very entertaining, full of swinging performances captured in stellar Pure DSD 256 sound quality. One NativeDSD listener called it one of the best albums he has downloaded to date with excellent performances, music and sound quality that is a game changer. That says it all.

These Pure DSD albums are pretty much a given- I know they will be great and am much more willing to give the download a try. In fact it can be a let down for more than a few seconds when I go from listening to one of these to a regular high resolution album. Oh and this album- it is great. Eszter’s voice is very relaxing and with that expansive sound from the band backing her up makes things perfect.
