Schubert Death and the Maiden & Shostakovich Chamber Symphony in C minor

In 1894, around the time that he was completing his Resurrection Symphony, Gustav Mahler planned to transcribe Schubert’s penultimate quartet for string orchestra, notating copious details about intended instrumentation, dynamics and articulation in his copy of the score. He only completed one movement – the second – which he conducted in Hamburg in November 1894, in the course of an orchestral series which he had taken over from his recently-deceased friend Hans von Bu?low. The other three movements were arranged from Mahler’s annotations by the scholar Donald Mitchell and the composer David Matthews.
