Telemann: 12 Solo Fantasias is Caroline Eidsten Dahl’s third release on LAWO Classics at NativeDSD Music. Here she gives us eloquent block flute interpretations of Telemann’s (very danceable) Fantasies for Solo Flute, TWV 40:2-13.
Caroline Eidsten Dahl says “Finally the whole album with Telemann Solo Fantasies is here! A big thanks to Lawo Classics, producer Vegard Landaas, recording engineer Thomas Wolden, photographer and booklet designer Anna-Julia Granberg, booklet author Elizabeth Svarstad and to the flute builders Nikolaj Ronimus and Luca de Paolis.”
Elizabeth Svarstad tells us “Menuette, sarabande, bourrée, gigue, gavotte, hornpipe and polonese. Like many other composers, Georg Philipp Telemann used dance as a basis for his compositions. This is no more evident than in his fantasias for flute, where we find several examples. Although the music is written for neither the ballroom, theater nor opera, references to the baroque French court dance are clear and abundant.
Music therefore invites something more than a pure listening experience, also evoking movement and corporeal responses. If that is indeed the desired effect. However, for most of today’s audience, baroque dance is not so easily accessible. I will therefore provide an insight into the art of baroque dance and some of the characteristic features of the dance movements and invite you to observe Telemann’s fantasies through the eyes of the dance.”

Positive Feedback
Caroline Eidsten Dahl is a true master of the tenor recorder. Her technique seems as inexhaustible as Telemann’s inventiveness. She plays with immaculate skill, but expressively—quite a lovely match to the felicities of Telemann’s music.
Her solo performances in these Fantasias are engaging, flexible, and nicely nuanced. I was surprised to look up and see that she’s completed the first nine fantasias without me losing focus on her recital in the slightest. For a sequence of solo works like this, that is quite a complement to how engaging a performer she is.
I consider this album a very attractive addition to my music library and it is highly recommended.

Recorded in a suitably resonant acoustic this is a very refined and highly enjoyable release with, as already stated, superlatively high musical standards. Whether you prefer recorder or transverse flute will be up to you, but this can stand comparison with any alternative.
