In their first recording from Lawo Classics, Trio Brax showcases music by the three Norwegian composers – Kjell Habbestad, Håvard Lund and Helge Iberg – as well as music by Paul Hindemith. The trio features Julia Neher (Viola), Ola Asdahl Rokkones (Tenor Saxophone) and Sergej Osadchuk (Piano).
With the unusual combination of viola, tenor saxophone and piano, Trio Brax is an odd flower in the world of classical chamber music. The highlighting of two instruments that are not commonly identified as soloistic is intriguing and offers a different palette to the listener. While other conventional piano trios can pick and choose from a wide range of well-known classical works, there used to be just one famous work written for the ensemble type of Trio Brax – Trio Op. 47 by Paul Hindemith – from 1928. Well – until now!
Challenging three of Norway’s leading contemporary composers to plunge into this universe initially discovered by Hindemith, a new and exciting repertory has emerged. As the combination of the three instruments opens up brand new timbres, musical landscapes and dynamic voyages, the three new works display a wide range of musical colors. We are presented with music that is playful without being experimental, expressive as well as virtuosic on multiple levels.

Positive Feedback
The combination of instruments is unusual, so much so that there are few compositions available for such an ensemble… Trio Brax challenged three of Norway’s leading contemporary composers to expand the catalog of music available for this trio of instruments so nicely explored by Hindemith, but rarely plumbed since. All three rose to the challenge with works that are uniquely different each from the others and all from Hindemith’s opus. These new compositions open new timbres, new combinations of colors, new dynamic explorations. Ranging from whimsical to expressive and virtuosic, these new works are each a delight of discovery. All are eminently accessible.
These performances by Trio Brax are engagingly filled with a lively energy, excellent ensemble, and great technical skill. The recorded sound is clear, clean, and detailed, with a lovely balance of direct and reverberant sound. Highly recommended.
BBC Radio Three Record Review
A beautiful sound world and they are beautifully recorded as well. The thing that really strikes me about the recording is just how good the playing is, all three of them are obviously great instrumentalists and they work beautifully together.
The group craftsmanship is always excellent. If anyone is going to say who the Hindemith Trio is, it’s Trio Brax isn’t it?
