The first release in a cycle honoring the great George Walker is out now. The National Symphony Orchestra performs Walker’s Sinfonia No. 4 “Strands” conducted by Gianandrea Noseda in a specially priced Stereo and 5 Channel DSD Surround Sound Single.
This DSD Single follows the National Symphony Orchestra’s debut album on the NSO label Dvorak: Symphony No. 9 and Copland: Billy the Kid which is also available in Stereo and 5 Channel DSD Surround Sound from NativeDSD Music. It is linked below.
In January 2022, the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) and Music Director Gianandrea Noseda began performing and recording the complete cycle of George Walker’s sinfonias, in celebration of the composer’s 100th birthday. Remembering and honoring the music of George Walker is particularly special for the NSO given the mutual connection to Washington, D.C.
“The sinfonias of George Walker have been an extraordinary musical discovery for me,” said Gianandrea Noseda. “They are concise in expression, rigorous in structure, and they have their own unique sound world. I am certain that the performances we are giving will result in recordings which confirm that George Walker is one of the great composers of recent times.”
The first release features Walker’s Sinfonia No. 4 “Strands”, with subsequent releases scheduled through 2024. The five Stereo and 5 Channel DSD releases will be accompanied by music videos on digital services, along with interviews and behind-the-scenes content featured across social media platforms. The cycle of digital releases will culminate in a bespoke album in Stereo and 5 Channel DSD Surround Sound.

Positive Feedback
In January 2022, the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) and Music Director Gianandrea Noseda began performing and recording the complete cycle of George Walker’s sinfonias, in celebration of the composer’s 100th birthday. This is the first release, as an EP, from that cycle which continues in progress. It is a work of a little over 9 minutes 30 seconds and well worth hearing. Noseda and the NSO do a compelling job in communicating this work, and the live DSD256 recording is excellent.
Walker describes the Sinfonia as “complex, intense and compact. I wanted to compose a work that was more than an overture or extended fanfare. The subtitle ‘Strands’ refers to the intertwining of various melodic elements that are unrelated to each other. Two of those strands are the initial phrases of spirituals.” And it is indeed dense and compact, filled with energy and impact. I am eager to hear more!

This DSD Single is full of surprises. The dynamic range is unreal, the attacks by the orchestra hit you. You will enjoy this recording a lot.

Like many of us, I am quite busy. But it always helps to have some feedback.
This is a great recording, but, more importantly, it’s a great track. Even if you don’t love classical.
I would rate it a must have.
