Modest Mussorgksy owes his reputation to three compositions in particular: his opera Boris Godunov, his orchestral fantasy Night on the Bare Mountain and his descriptive collection of solo piano pieces entitled Pictures at an Exhibition. It is indeed an intriguing fact that these works achieved worldwide fame not in their original form, but in versions crated by other composers.
