Annelien van Wauwe is a former BBC New Generation Artist and winner of the ARD International Music Competition 2012 and the renowned Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award 2018. She kickstarts an exclusive collaboration with Pentatone with Belle Epoque, her first solo album.
Belle Epoque is built around treasures of French turn-of-the-century music such as Debussy’s Première Rhapsodie, Pierné’s Canzonetta and Widor’s Introduction et Rondo (the latter two in arrangements by Jelle Tassyns). Belle époque also offers works that display a spiritual kinship to the age, such as Brahms’s first clarinet sonata, arranged by Luciano Berio, and a world-premiere recording of Paris-based contemporary composer Manfred Trojahn (Rhapsodie pour clarinette et orchestre).
Annelien Van Wauwe tells NativeDSD: “Feeling enthusiastic about now being a member of the Pentatone artist’s family would be an understatement. Recording albums for a label that mirrors all aspects of my artistic personality is like having found a second voice to express the music that I care for so deeply. Both Pentatone and I aim for outstanding quality and honest interpretations to experience the intensive emotions of music. I feel thrilled that I will be sharing these with our listeners soon. Working with Renaud Loranger and his highly qualified and charismatic team has been and will be a most inspiring experience. I am looking forward to the release of the first solo album ‘belle époque’ and future cooperation.”
Renaud Loranger, Vice President Artists and Repertoire at Pentatone says: “I have been following Annelien’s career with growing interest over the last couple of years, and I am thrilled that she is joining the label. She has that exceptional combination of artistry, musicianship, and virtuosity, fueled by a relentlessly curious mind and voracious appetite for repertoire and the realm of possibilities the instrument offers. We look forward to extraordinary developments.”

Press reviews
The Telegraph
“(Debussy’s Première Rhapsodie) makes a seductive start, with Wauwe’s first note burgeoning from silence while the orchestra shimmers around her, and she is equally responsive to the music’s sudden feline leaps into a wholly different mood.

Clarinetist Annelien Van Wauwe explores turn-of-the-century French and European repertoire on this recording, which is her debut.
As well as Debussy’s Rhapsody for clarinet and orchestra, and the rare treat of a Rhapsody from German composer Manfred Trojahn, the album includes arrangements of Widor’s Introduction and Rondo, Op. 72 and Pierné’s Canzonetta.
The centerpiece is Brahms’ Clarinet Sonata No. 1 in which Van Wauwe is joined by the Lille National Orchestra, conducted by Alexandre Bloch.
“The Belle époque or “beautiful era” was a period at the end of the 19th century symbolized by gold. It was a time characterized by optimism, happiness, peace and social tranquility,” Van Wauwe explains.
“Art and music were inspired very much by nature, so you can see many flowing lines and curves in music, as well as in art [of the time].”
