Girasoli is a new Fone Jazz album featuring Gabriele Mirabassi, Nando Di Modugno and Pierluigi Balducci. The trio plays mainly music from their own pen, but also some titles by Pat Metheny (Minuano) and Henry Mancini (Love Theme From I Girasoli). It’s available in Stereo DSD 64 from NativeDSD Music.
Whether in Jazz or Classical music, the clarinet in Italy has a name: Gabriele Mirabassi. The Umbrian virtuoso converted to Jazz in the mid-nineties and made a name for himself in the scene mainly through his collaborations with Richard Galliano, Steve Swallow, Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor and especially Michel Godard. With his amazing instrumental technique, he is now one of the top names in Italy in both Classical Music and Jazz.
At his side in this extraordinary trio is guitarist Nando di Modugno, a name that itself sounds like an Andres Segovia composition, fully in keeping with Mirabassi’s predilection for Brazilian rhythms, Spanish folklore and the arpeggios and cantilenas of the South, music he has thoroughly researched. To this end, Mirabassi breathes life, poetry and pathos into the Chamber Music gesture with his organic melisma.
The meaty, sonorous bass is provided by none other than Pierluigi Balducci, a great of the Italian Jazz scene and, among other things, a member of the prominent Nuevo Tango Ensamble, one of the most important European ensembles in the field of Tango.

I was so captivated by this album that it felt like I had only spent 10 minutes listening to the music when the album ended. Gabriele Mirabassi’s clarinet playing is both beautiful and interesting, with the clarinet generally soaring above the recessed guitar and bass. Given the clarinet is so forward in the mix, and being a jazz newcomer, I was very pleasantly surprised at the fine guitar and bass playing. I did come away thinking that I would have liked the guitar to have been a little more prominent in the mix, however, I still consider this to be a superb album.
