From the very time that he entered the Jazz scene in the early nineties, saxophonist Yuri Honing found new ways to move people with his slightly melancholic sound and crystal clear constructions he used for his improvisations. Since then he has performed and recorded with such Jazz greats as Pat Metheny, Paul Bley, Gary Peacock, and Charlie Haden. His new album Memory Lane is a ballad album that shows Honing’s lyrical side. For this project, he invited some of the finest musicians from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra to create a large ensemble with strings, woodwind, and rhythm section. This DSD recording sounds as if you were there in the studio as it was recorded.

Memory Lane is an unusually pleasant & accessible album containing a selection of beautiful ballad tunes from artists such as Keith Jarrett, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Pat Metheny, Billy Joel, & Charlie Haden played by a large ensemble of top musicians of both Classical & Jazz backgrounds. This album features Yuri Honing with a Large Ensemble conducted by Henk Meutgeert.

For this album, Yuri Honing recorded compositions that for some reason were important in his teens, hence the title.  It’s a selection of eight pieces, or in Yuri’s words: “The time span of one set’.

“Keith Jarrett is and always has been my ‘kitchen sink’: after a night’s playing, I clear my head with Jarrett. Together with Jack DeJohnette and Gary Peacock, he presented a fresh view of the piano trio and – starting from the Bill Evans tradition they added some things of their own.

Audiophile Audition

Having no idea what to expect on this imported disc of unfamiliar Dutch musicians, I thought it was a vocalist of some sort. Instead, we have a soprano and tenor sax soloist somewhat in the style of Paul Desmond, backed by a classically-oriented ensemble including French horn, violin, cello and flute, and eight great tunes by such as Wayne Shorter, Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, and Billy Joel!

The album’s title comes from the fact that these are all tunes that were important to the Dutch saxophonist in his teens. He didn’t want to do a sax-with-strings album but he did want to record something more accessible than his usual avant jazz improvisations. He and his two arrangers started with the French horn and added instrumental voices to give a pleasing backing yet one free of the clichés of many jazz-soloist-plus-ensemble sessions.

Let me just say he met his goals – this is the best lighter-jazz album I’ve heard in a long time! Tunes: Prism, Infant Eyes, Chan’s Song, Together, Hermitage, New York State of Mind, Sands, For Turiya.
