Finland x Hungary

With the Ural language Finland and Hungary share the same roots. This album by pianist Kyoko Fukushi explores the identity of each country.

The recording of Sibelius’ ‘Finlandia’ commemorates the 100th anniversary of Finland’s independence. The masterpiece contributed greatly to the country’s Independence. The piano arrangements for this piece were also made by Sibelius himself.

Kodaly’s Seven Pieces presents a fusion of Hungarian folk songs with influence from French impressionism such as Brahms, polyphony of Italian 16th century Italy, Debussy etc. This is very characteristic for the early style of Kodaly.

Rather than using folk songs for his Suites, Bartók wrote in a characteristic way that sublimates national phonetics, rhythms, and timbre.

Englund’s Pavane and Toccata has rhythmic melodies full of energy running throughout the composition.

With slow and fast parts, Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody is reminiscing the melody of the gypsy folk instrument Tsimbalon full of splendor and passion.
