Raaf Hekkema Performing The Bach Cello Suites 

Challenge Classics writes: “This is so great! Raaf Hekkema performing the Bach Cello Suites on 6 different saxophones. Just finished the editing and mixing and this DSD production will soon be available on Challenge Classics.” Jan 2018 DSD Download Release on Challenge Classics.

Raaf Hekkema arranged the Cello Suites himself for Historic Saxophone and the sheet music will be available at shott-music expectedly in the course of 2018.

Suite 1 on 1922 Conn C-melody saxophone
(a classic that was widely sold in the US at the start of the 20th century)

Suite 2 on 1932 Selmer/Adolphe Sax tenor saxophone
(Selmer’s first saxophone after buying out the remains of Adolphe Sax’s son’s saxophone factory. The instrument consists of mainly Sax’s material, except for the keywork)

Suite 3 on 1991 Yanagisawa Elimona soprano saxophone
(the first soprano with a detachable neck)

Suite 4 on 1928 Conn F mezzo-soprano saxophone
(Conn’s failed attempt to conquer the market with an innovative alto in F)

Suite 5 on 1927 Buescher straight alto saxophone
(Buescher’s failed attempt to conquer the market with an innovative straight alto)

Suite 6 on 1985 Buffet-Crampon Prestige alto saxophone
(The first saxophone in red copper, a softer material that makes it suitable for classical playing)

Bach Concerti with Marcin Swiatkiewicz

Channel Classics was In The DSD Studio in Poland recently with harpsichordist Marcin Swiatkiewicz to record Bach Concerti. The session was produced and engineered by Channel Classics and NativeDSD Music Managing Director Jared Sacks. Looking forward to seeing this one in the NativeDSD Music store in the months ahead.

“I have gotten to know Marcin because he is a member of the Brecon Baroque Ensemble – an ensemble that Rachel Podger put together. There was no doubt as to his playing abilities within the ensemble so that for me to drive to Poland to record these Bach concertos using one string player per part sounded like a chance worth taking. Having a small ensemble recording for the Bach gave us the opportunity to really hear all the inner parts that otherwise would be lost when large ensembles play these concertos.“
